SLOTH BEAR TRAFFIC CASUALTY IN MELGHAT TIGER RESERVE - 4th January 2013

In a tragic incident, the state highway passing through the core area of Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR) caused the tragic death of a sloth bear in the small hours of Friday. An unknown vehicle hit the female sloth bear near Semadoh village. The Satpuda Foundation reported that animal suffered a head injury and died on the spot..

Villagers who have agricultural land close to the Sipna River bed, which flows parallel to this highway, said that in the early morning they saw two cubs around the body of the sloth bear. The death of the mother bear may now turn tragic for the two cubs.

Deputy conservator of forests (DyCF) Yuvraj immediately rushed to the spot and registered an offence. The carcass was later burned in his presence.

The Satpuda Foundation commented that, with the highway claiming the lives of many wild animals, there has been a consistent demand to shut it to night traffic, and hoped the wildlife department acts urgently.
